Hi, I’m Suji. And I home educate my fun-loving, only child.
We are a family of three Malaysians who lived in Malaysia and Singapore before moving to sunny California in Dec 2005. Our son, or the kiddo as I refer to in this blog, was born in 2002. The kiddo is now nine in chronological age (as of 2012) but all over the map in grade level.
The Funschooling Story
We homeschool, or rather funschool, because I simply cannot imagine the kiddo thriving in a formal, traditional, brick-and-mortar learning environment. We experimented with a private kindy in 2007. The experiment failed after just three weeks. The kiddo wanted very much to continue learning at home. So, we followed his desire and will continue to do so till he wants a change.
We jumped into "official" homeschooling almost overnight. I was very unprepared. And so began homeschooling in a typical school-at-home fashion. I tried many different homeschooling methods when he was five and six, flitting anxiously from one to another hoping always to find that perfect fit. When he was seven, I decided to let go of methods and choose a more eclectic path.
Ever since, we've been using living books, puzzles and comics or DVDs and books on tape as well as field trips, online class, co-ops, even college-level texts. Some of it is assigned, much of it is delight-directed. We follow a simple schedule but it's only a guideline. We are learning all the time.
I began this blog in 2008 as a place to park all the great links and information I come across. I hope it will be beneficial to my readers.
Since the beginning of official homeschooling, we've been with either an independent study program (ISP) or a homeschool charter (both are based on the public school model although almost nothing we do is "public school-ish" in nature). It's fortunate that although it has been compulsory for us to meet a school representative every month and hand in attendance forms, we enjoy a lot of flexibility in how we learn.

Hi,
I just found your blog (from the Mosaic group) and love what I've read so far. I also homeschool my 6.5yr old son, but we're "down under" in Australia.
Off to read some more - I just had to comment first :)
Welcome Kez and thanks for stopping by :)

Aawww...thanks Heather (blush!). Please feel free to link away!
Loving your blog, Suji. Also looking to getting to know you three better over the coming months and years. You all bring such a fun feeling to the events you've attended.
Thank you Lisa! We are extremely grateful to you for hosting these events and very humbled by the kids and their parents and by how much we have to learn :) Thanks for dropping by!
Hey Suji --
I must say I laughed out loud at your comment about how A would ask someone if they had washed their hand before he shook it. We just had that happen to us at Thanksgiving. R refused to shake hands with this one friend. I got a little mad at him and took him aside to give him a bit of a earful when he explained to me that he has seen the friend coughing into his hands before trying to shake R's hands and explained "I don't want to get H1N1"!!
Hope you are well!! Like the re-written intro.
Amita
LOL, thanks Amita! It's good to have someone know exactly what I mean :)
